YRMC Certified Diabetes Educators offer a comprehensive diabetes education program for children, teens and their parents. The program uses individual appointments for patients with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.
Diabetes self management training is tailored to the child's age. It covers the knowledge and skills required for children to manage their disease and for parents to assist in their care. The Certified Diabetes Educator works closely with the child's doctor and tracks the child's status and progress in attaining the skills required to manage diabetes.
The YRMC Diabetes Education Center also sponsors two annual events that focus on children with diabetes.
- Camp Celebrations -- A free day camp, held twice a year, providing a medically supervised day of fun and education for children ages 8 – 16 with diabetes. The location varies with the season and the activities are tailored to the venues. Camp Celebrations creates a safe environment for children to make friends and learn that they are not alone in learning to live with diabetes. It also teaches children more about how to independently manage their diabetes.
The next Camp Celebrations will be held on July 26, 2012 at Wild River Family Entertainment Center. Children will enjoy bowling, laser tag, educational games and a healthy lunch. Space is limited, register today! Click here for a registration form.
- Back to School with Diabetes -- This August event is designed to help families who have a child with diabetes plan for their child's success in the coming school year. Members of YRMC's diabetes health care team are on hand to answer questions, and parents can pick up a free School Advisory Toolkit. While parents are meeting with healthcare providers, kids can visit the student corner to see web sites specially designed for children with diabetes and play Wii Fit games.
