Yuma Regional Medical Center offers several classes to help mothers-to-be and their partners prepare for the new arrival.
Childbirth Preparation Classes
Certified childbirth educator Donna Gradias makes these classes informative, fun and entertaining as she guides students through the important topics such as breathing techniques, pain management, medication and helpful tips for birth coaches. The class, which also includes a tour of the birthing center and tips on car seat safety, is offered in two formats:
6-week Childbirth Preparation Class
This class also includes instruction on infant massage.
Dates and times: 6 to 9 p.m. for six consecutive weeks on a choice of either Tuesdays, or Wednesdays or Thursdays
Cost: $60 per couple
One-day Childbirth Preparation Class
Couples are advised to register early for this intensive, fast-paced class. It fills up early!
Dates and times: Saturday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. (Class held once a month)
Cost: $60 per couple
Breastfeeding Class
Designed to be taken before the baby is born, this two-hour class covers the techniques of successful breastfeeding. The course is taught by a professional Lactation Consultant who can address questions or concerns that prospective mothers may have.
Dates and times: Wednesday, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. (Class held once a month)
Cost: $20 per couple
Sibling Class
Parents, be sure to bring your cameras for this one! Siblings ages 2 to 11 will don surgical caps and booties for this fun class where they'll learn all about being a big brother or sister and the big changes that are coming their way. They'll take a tour, watch a video and even practice holding a baby (with a baby doll, of course!). At least one parent must attend with the child, and dinner is provided for the child.
Dates and times: Monday, 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. (Class held once every other month)
Cost: $20 per child, each additional sibling is $5
Newborn Care Class
How do you bathe a slippery baby? What in the world is swaddling? Answers to these mysteries and many other baby basics are covered in this lighthearted yet highly informative class that concludes with a diaper-changing contest.
Dates and times: Monday, 6 to 9 p.m. (Class held once a month)
Cost: $20 per couple

Payment is due one week before each class begins, as you must register as a new patient. Payment may be made at the admissions area in the YRMC Women & Children Service lobby from 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Sorry, no refunds.
