Yuma Regional Cancer Center Announces “Caring for our Community: Yuma’s First Cancer Education Symposium”

Seminars bring together medical community and the general public for educational opportunities, a motivational speaker and breakout sessions

Yuma, AZ – January 21, 2014- On Saturday, February 1, 2014, the newly-accredited Yuma Regional Cancer Center, a Mayo Clinic Care Network member, will combine forces with several of the region's top physicians and oncologists for a day of educational seminars for "Caring for our Community: Yuma's First Cancer Education Symposium." All seminars and breakout sessions will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn, Pivot Point Conference Center (310 North Madison Ave) and welcomes physicians, medical professionals, caregivers, cancer survivors and members of the general public interested in learning about the latest technologies and case studies on cancer treatment and care.

"We are in the midst of building a state-of-the-art Cancer Center, we recently received accreditation from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer and Yuma Regional Medical Center has recruited three new oncologists to the area," said Dean Putt, Administrative Director of Yuma Regional Cancer Center. "At Yuma Regional Cancer Center we are about community and putting patients first. By assisting local physicians with advanced educational opportunities, giving our community access to the latest clinical trials in cancer research and offering Yuma residents a chance to hear about uplifting stories and case studies, we are able to give back to the community in the best way we know how."

The Oncology Symposium for Medical Professionals begins at 8am. Sessions include:

  • Advanced Surgical Techniques in Breast Cancer from Barbara Pockaj, M.D., Mayo Clinic
  • Advanced Strategies in Management of Metastatic Prostate Cancer, from Brenda Ernst, M.D., Fellow at Mayo Clinic and future Yuma Regional Cancer Center Oncologist
  • An Inside Look at a Local Comprehensive Case Study from Peter Sullivan, M.D., Yuma Regional Cancer Center
  • Other advanced medical presentations

Beginning at 11:30am, medical professionals are invited to stay for lunch where they will be joined by members of the community for a keynote address on Finding the Joy in Everything from Dave Caperton, nationally-known comedian and motivational speaker. This activity has been approved by the Arizona Nurses' Association for 3.25 CEUs.

Following lunch and the keynote speech, members of the general public and medical community are invited to the second half of this year's symposium for breakout sessions from 1:15-3pm. Breakout sessions include:

  • Living with Cancer: Finding Hope and Connection from Jeanne Elnadry M.D.
  • Xoft Technology: Treatment for Basal Cell Carcinoma from Timothy Galang, M.D., Yuma Regional Cancer Center
  • Am I at High Risk for Breast Cancer? from Connie Uribe, M.D.
  • Other cancer care presentations
