Nurses, doctors, staff and administrators unite with families in Yuma to make a stand for babies born prematurely

Yuma, AZ- April 10, 2014- On Saturday, April 12, Yuma Regional Medical Center registered nurses, staff, administrators, physicians and their families will join together as a team outside of the hospital walls to March for Babies as part of the March of Dimes program. This is the fifth year employees and staff of YRMC will gather to participate in the annual walk. Departments participating in the walk include the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Labor, Delivery, Recovery and Postpartum (LDRP), Respiratory Therapy, Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy and Pharmacy Departments.

Originally founded by President Franklin Roosevelt to fight against polio, the mission of the March of Dimes foundation shifted in 2003 to raise awareness and find the causes of prematurity in babies. The campaign aligns with the goals of NICU nurses, who use their expertise and knowledge on a daily basis to advocate and care for babies born prematurely.

Working in the NICU helps these nurses make a difference in each of the baby's lives through caring for the babies as well as the family members," said Tarisai Zivira, R.N. with YRMC's NICU and organizer of the YRMC Walk for Babies team. "The nurses are blessed with an opportunity to not only save a life but to enrich it through advocating for the babies and their family's well-being. Walking for babies is a way to support the cause and raise awareness."

The NICU is a multi-specialty operations intensive care unit that cares for babies that are ill and/or are born prematurely. The YRMC NICU has 20 beds, which includes intensive care and continuing care. Led by Neonatologist Dr. Gregory Warda, YRMC's Neonatal nurses collaborate with other physicians, additional nursing staff, respiratory therapists, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, laboratory staff, pharmacists, volunteers and many more hospital representatives. The NICU works closely with YRMC's LDRP physicians and staff to ensure the safety and stability of mothers and babies.

"As I make that walk, I am walking on behalf of all the babies who passed through the NICU and made it," said Zivira. "Additionally, I am walking to remember the babies that were lost and the families that lost their loved ones. It's a way to celebrate life and its wonders."

The 2014 March for Babies Yuma event is Saturday, April 12 at West Wetlands Park (2200 Water Street
Yuma, AZ 85364). Registration begins at 7a.m. and the walk begins at 8a.m. For more information, visit http://www.marchofdimes.com/arizona/events/10304.html.
