YRMC’s 100th LAP-BAND® Surgery Completed
(August 15, 2011 – Yuma, AZ) –The Yuma Regional Medical Center (YRMC) Bariatric Surgery Program recently completed its 100th LAP-BAND® surgery. The YRMC Bariatric Surgery Program did its first surgery in June, 2009.
The LAP-BAND® System is an option for long-term weight loss. In this minimally invasive procedure, a silicone band is placed around the upper part of the stomach to control hunger and food intake. The band is adjustable and usually takes a few adjustments to find a “sweet spot” for weight loss, according to Dr. Jensen. She says the LAP-BAND® is much safer than gastric bypass surgery, and although it may take longer to lose the weight, you typically reach the same weight loss goals as would be expected with gastric bypass.
According to a report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), from 2007 – 2009, the number of states with adult obesity of 30 percent or more has tripled. Diabetes, high cholesterol, hypertension and arthritis are just some of the effects attributed to obesity. As adult obesity continues to rise, it’s important to provide our community with options such as the LAP-BAND®.
The YRMC Bariatric Center offers a comprehensive program for LAP-BAND® patients that teach them to make healthier decisions and includes support groups, patient education, and dietician services. The program typically begins three to six months before surgery and continues after surgery with the support groups.
