(June 11, 2012 – Yuma, AZ) – The Foundation of Yuma Regional Medical Center is working hard to provide new backpacks and school supplies to underprivileged students in Yuma county and surrounding communities through the Drive for School Supplies.

“The need from local students is even greater this year than anticipated,” says Committee Co-Chair Tom Tyree. “Local schools have requested 3,754 backpacks. This is more than 344 filled backpacks from last year” Co-Chair Rachael Barkley adds “The Drive for School Supplies is committed to ensuring every child in need has the necessary school supplies.”

The Drive for School Supplies’ Community Partners – Hoppstetters, Walgreens, SignPro and Del Outdoor, are leading the community school drive. It is through their efforts and that of Yuma county businesses, organizations and individuals that needy students throughout Yuma County will be prepared for the new academic year.

Due to the overwhelming request for support, it will now take $46,000 to provide backpacks and school supplies to Yuma County Schools. To date, the Foundation has raised $30,000 and is asking for the community’s support to help meet the Drive for School Supplies fundraising goal. Each filled backpack costs the Drive for School Supplies $12. Donations can be made on-line at or at the Foundation. In addition to cash donations, school supplies of backpacks, crayons, markers, colored pencils, glue sticks, 3-ring binders, folders, notebook paper, rulers, erasers and dictionaries can be made. Donations of school supplies are accepted at the Foundation of Yuma Regional Medical Center located at 399 West 32nd Street. All donations are tax-deductible.

The mission of the Foundation of Yuma Regional Medical Center is to support a healthy community through philanthropy. Qualified as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, the Foundation relies on donations to support community programs such as the Drive for School Supplies, School Health Care Program; healthcare scholarships; diabetes education; breast cancer screening and support; and the Y.O.U.T.H. Obesity Initiative.
