(May 17, 2013 – Yuma, Arizona) – The Yuma Regional Cancer Center groundbreaking celebrates a multi-year dream to make world-class cancer care and treatments available in our community.

"Community members, the YRMC Board of Directors, administration, physicians and staff have been working toward this day for several years," said Pat Walz, CEO of Yuma Regional Medical Center (YRMC). "Last fall, the community was asked to submit ideas for the cancer center – that feedback was used in planning for location, patient flow, customer service and amenities. Many of these ideas are reflected in the final design."

Today's groundbreaking celebrates over 85 cancer survivors and their families. Survivors will carry a flag of honor as part of the ceremony. Following the groundbreaking, the flags will be displayed on the site of the new cancer center as a visual reminder of the hope and promise they bring our community.

When the new cancer center opens in early summer 2014, it will usher in a new era for cancer care in our community. It will have triple the space, expanded services and additional physicians, allowing cancer patients to remain in Yuma – close to family and friends – with the latest diagnostic and treatment capabilities available, supported by our community.

"Our goal is to provide the best cancer-care experience that meets the needs of patients in one location, without having to leave town," said Walz.

The 38,000 square foot cancer center will feature comprehensive services under one roof. Seamless connections from one service to the next will ensure that care is delivered in the most efficient, personalized manner. Further enhancing the spectrum to services available to patients, is YRMC's membership in the Mayo Clinic Care Network. This provides cancer center physicians direct access to the latest Mayo Clinic expertise and clinical care resources, ensuring the Yuma community of the most current cancer diagnostic and treatment techniques.
