(June 21, 2013 – Yuma, Arizona) Over 650 Yuma Regional Medical Center (YRMC) employees are participating in a four-week Step-by-Step Challenge as part of YRMC's Wellness Program. The challenge began on Monday, June 3, 2013, and runs through the end of the month.
It is intended to motivate YRMC employees to incorporate more steps into their day and increase their daily physical activity time. Using a pedometer, employees record the number of steps taken in a day, with a goal of increasing that number to 10,000 steps per day by the end of the challenge. For someone with an average stride of about two and a half feet, then 10,000 steps equates to about five miles per day.
"This Step-by-Step Team Challenge program helps our employees achieve better health by keeping track of what they're already doing," said Wellness Coordinator Nicole Dallam. "Examples of what employees are doing to meet their goals include taking the stairs instead of elevators and walking with friends or family in the evening to complete 10,000 steps that day."
During the first two weeks, 55 teams had walked a total of 31,823 miles. This is equivalent to walking around the world once and then onward from Yuma, Arizona to Athens, Greece. By June 30, YRMC employees may have circled the world twice – stay tuned to find out!
