Hundreds Gather at Yuma Regional Medical Center for a Community Celebration

Two-part event recognizes commitment to community, the significance of the past and pledge to the future

May 17, 2014- Yuma, AZ - Yuma Regional Medical Center (YRMC) hosted a two-part event this evening to honor the history of Parkview Hospital and celebrate the future of YRMC's new Emergency Department.

Community leaders, YRMC executives, physicians, staff and board members gathered at the site of the original Parkview Hospital for a ceremony to commemorate the hospital's history since its founding in 1958. In addition to honoring the past, the event celebrated YRMC's future and the groundbreaking of its state-of-the-art, expanded Emergency Department. YRMC's new Emergency Department will increase bed capacity from 37 to 72 and will accommodate more than 100,000 visits a year, compared to 70,000 presently. YRMC is the third-busiest emergency department in the state of Arizona.

"To build an Emergency Department of this caliber takes more than just bricks and mortar," said Phillip C. Richemont, M.D. & Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine. "It is about the services provided and quality care offered to our patients; the kind of care they deserve. For years, the ED team has worked diligently to comply with national standards and implement new procedures, building the groundwork for a solid Emergency Department. This commitment to the Yuma community is already in place and will transition with us to the new ED structure. I commend the ED team; the true foundation of YRMC's new Emergency Department."

Additionally, the new Parkview Loop street sign was unveiled, which designates an appropriate name for YRMC's new ring road. The ring road will connect Yuma Regional Medical Center's 24th Street Entrance and Avenue A along the south side of the hospital and will provide vital access to major entry points throughout the expanded campus. The ring road is scheduled for completion in September 2014. By naming the new ring road Parkview Loop, YRMC pays homage to Parkview Hospital – honoring our physicians, community leaders and District Boards for their contribution and early vision to bring superior healthcare close to home.

"Just as we celebrate the groundbreaking of our new Emergency Department and acknowledge the importance of this state-of-the-art building, we also recognize the commitment of our visionaries - the physicians, nurses, staff and board members who founded Parkview in 1958," said Pat Walz, President & CEO of Yuma Regional Medical Center. "Parkview Loop is another way for us to show appreciation for our past."

The ceremony culminated with the landing of an emergency helicopter freshly-painted with YRMC's logo, showcasing the hospital's official partnership with Tristate Careflight. Emergency Department staff, nurses and physicians then presented the crowd with special viewfinders, displaying historical photos and renderings of the future building.

Following the ceremony, the community celebrated with an outdoor 3D screening of the Disney Pixar movie "UP." Gates opened at 6:30 p.m. and guests enjoyed concessions, family activities and more.

"The movie 'UP' was the perfect fit because it is a film with an underlying theme of adventure, future and resiliency, and our hospital is celebrating the adventures of our future," said Machele Headington, Vice President of Communication & Marketing for YRMC. "This hospital's core purpose it to serve the families within our community, so a family night was a fitting event. Thank you to all who helped with this event and who joined us on this lovely evening."

Yuma Regional Medical Center is a 406-bed, not-for-profit hospital dedicated to providing outstanding medical care to the residents of Yuma and the surrounding communities in southwestern Arizona. The YRMC team includes over 2,000 employees, 300 doctors and hundreds of volunteers who work closely together to create a welcoming, caring, and compassionate environment for patients and their families.
