Foundation of YRMC Supports the School Health Care Program

(July 11, 2011 Yuma, AZ) – The Foundation of Yuma Regional Medical Center presented Sunset Community Health Center with $25,000 in support of the School Health Care Program representing the first payment on the annual pledge of $100,000.

The program was created in 1996 by the Foundation of YRMC. It was the vision of Gary Knox, past chairman of the Foundation, and Dr. Robert Cannell, a pediatrician. The objective of the School Health Care Program is to provide free medical care to children whose families lack health insurance. With sites located throughout Yuma County to include Rancho Viejo School, Pecan Grove School, San Luis and the East County Mobile Clinic, the School Health Care Program has served over 17,000 children since its inception. The School Health Care Program was initially administered by Yuma Regional Medical Center, but has since been turned over to Sunset Community Health Center in April 2011 to strengthen community outreach.

“The Foundation is proud to support such a worthy program providing care to those in need in Yuma County and we look forward to our continued partnership with Sunset Community Health Center and the School Health Care Program,” says Foundation Executive Director, Wayne A. Steffey.

The mission of the Foundation of Yuma Regional Medical Center is to support a health community through philanthropy. Qualified as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, the Foundation relies on donations to support community programs such as the School Health Care Program; healthcare scholarships; diabetes education; cancer screening and support; and the Y.O.U.T.H. Obesity Initiative.
