Students in Yuma County Walk Around the Earth through School Fitness Program

(July 2, 2012 – Yuma, AZ)– The Foundation of Yuma Regional Medical Center’s Mileage Club School Program through its Y.O.U.T.H. Initiative (Yuman’s Obesity Undermines Their Health) had a successful first year for the grantees participating in the program.

More than 2,000 students in four elementary schools throughout Yuma County logged an astonishing 47,257 miles with one participating school, Desert Mesa Elementary, logging a whopping 27,493 miles. (According to Universe Today, the equatorial circumference of the earth is about 24,901.55 miles). Schools participating in the grant program include Valley Horizon Elementary, Saint Francis of Assisi, Gary Knox Elementary and Desert Mesa Elementary School. The Mileage Club School Program will begin a new grant year in August and Pueblo Elementary School has been added as a participating grantee.

“The Foundation would like to congratulate the students and staff of each elementary school for participating in the program and making this first year phenomenal,” says Foundation Executive Director, Wayne Steffey. “The Foundation is excited to begin another grant year this fall and welcome our newest school, Pueblo Elementary”.

The Mileage Club School Program is a structured program for students to become physically active during recess time. At every after-lunch recess, students can walk laps and earn tokens to wear on “achievement chains”. The miles walked are logged and participants are rewarded as they accumulate tokens for their achievements along the way. Students also learn about healthy food choices through the 5-2-1-Almost None Program. The program is modeled after the Mileage Club Program, a national program through Fitness Finders which was first implemented in Yuma by Gary Knox Elementary School through a grant from the Foundation.

The mission of the Foundation of Yuma Regional Medical Center is to support a health community through philanthropy. Qualified as a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization, the Foundation relies on donations to support community programs such as the Child Safety Fair, the School Health Care Program; healthcare scholarships; diabetes education; breast cancer screening and support; the Y.O.U.T.H. Obesity Initiative; and the Drive for School Supplies.
