(December 19, 2012 – Yuma, AZ) Yuma Regional Medical Center (YRMC) is pleased to announce that the site of the new cancer center will be the southwest corner of the Yuma Elks property, adjacent to the current Yuma Regional Cancer Center location.
The Yuma Elks will remain in their current facility for up to three years. Since the new cancer center will be built on a different area of the property, construction of it can move forward. The Elks will eventually relocate their lodge to a portion of the former NCO building (on 32nd Street) and lease the remaining portion to the YMCA.
"The Yuma community is known for its ability to partner. This project and the collective efforts to make it a reality serve as another example of the greater good that comes from that effort. Both the Elks and the YMCA have been devoted to finding a collective good for our community. It has been an honor to work with these respected organizations and to see the benefits that will come to this community for years to come as a result of their efforts," said YRMC President and CEO Pat Walz.
Yuma Regional Medical Center began looking at sites for the new, comprehensive cancer center over a year ago. Primary criteria in the site search has been to secure a location that:
- Is within close proximity to the main hospital campus to provide ease of access for patients and their families
- Makes economic and strategic sense as YRMC explores the long-term health needs of the communities we serve; this is determined by looking at the immediate and long-term benefits to the of the site
- Offers enough land to consolidate several services into one area, making it easier for patients to navigate
- Meets the needs of our community – we should be good community stewards of our resources
The site location is beneficial for all three organizations because it is within close proximity to the hospital, to meet the needs of our patients and their families; provides an expanded facility for the Elks to better meet the needs of their growing membership; and offers additional space for the YMCA to assist in its desire to grow community services and programs.
"I, and the entire Board of the Yuma YMCA, extend our sincerest gratitude to Pat Walz, the YRMC Cancer Center Board, and Elks Lodge for allowing us the opportunity to be part of this project," said Executive Director of the Yuma Family YMCA, Chris Wheeler. "The building of the cancer center is a great step forward in improving the lives and health of the Yuma community, and we at the Y are looking forward to supporting the endeavors of the hospital now and in the years to come."
"The YMCA congratulates Yuma Regional Medical Center, the cancer center board and Pat Walz, President and CEO in the exciting announcement regarding the new cancer center for Yuma," said George Scobas, President and CEO, Valley of the Sun YMCA. "We are looking forward to expanding our community partnership with Yuma Regional Medical Center and the Elks Lodge #476 in building a healthier community through the services of our Yuma Family YMCA."
YRMC has a dream – to provide local cancer patients with the highest level of care, without having to leave the community, unless absolutely necessary. "The Elks and the YMCA have been an important part in making that dream a reality. We are grateful for their dedication," said Walz.
"The Yuma Elks extend our congratulations to YRMC on the building of a new cancer center," said Stewart Johnson, chairman of the Yuma Elks Board of Trustees. "We are proud to be a part of this monumental shift in healthcare for the community."
