(July 5, 2013 – Yuma, AZ) Community volunteers are gathering together to fill backpacks with school supplies for local students in support of the Drive for School Supplies.
The Drive for School Supplies was created in 2000 to provide less fortunate children in Yuma County with the school supplies needed to start the new school year. In the last 13 years, the Drive for School Supplies has provided 25,788 backpacks filled with school supplies to children in Yuma County. The Foundation of YRMC has been working with volunteers, businesses and organizations throughout the Yuma community since May to raise funds and acquire supplies needed to fulfill backpack orders.
"Volunteers will be working to assemble backpacks with school supplies at the Yuma Palms Mall for two weeks during the month of July," says Foundation Executive Director, Wayne Steffey. "Each school, in turn, will then distribute the filled backpacks to children in need." Drive for School Supplies committee co-chairs Tom Tyree and Rachael Barkley added, "There have been many activities associated with this Drive. The stuffing of the backpacks is our biggest push to get Yuma county students ready in time. We are grateful to the businesses, organizations and all the individuals who are taking part in stuffing backpacks."
To date, the Drive for School Supplies has raised over $25,000 of its $60,000 goal and is asking for the community's support to ensure each child has the necessary tools to start the school year off right. Each filled backpack costs the Drive for School Supplies $13. Donations can be made online at www.yumaregional.org or at the Foundation of Yuma Regional Medical Center office, located at 399 West 32nd Street. In addition to monetary gifts, donations of school supplies such as backpacks, crayons, markers, colored pencils, glue sticks, three-ring binders, folders, notebook paper, rulers, erasers and dictionaries can also be made at the Foundation office. All donations are tax-deductible.
The mission of the Foundation of Yuma Regional Medical Center is to support a healthy community through philanthropy. Qualified as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, the Foundation relies on donations to support community programs such as the Drive for School Supplies, School Health Care Program, healthcare scholarships, diabetes education, breast cancer screening and support, nutrition education and the Y.O.U.T.H.
