More than 18 million people in the United States have diabetes, and more than 5 million people don't even know they have the disease. Diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death by disease in the United States. It increases the chance of having heart disease or a stroke by two to four times. A telephone survey conducted in 2005 in Yuma County showed that over 17,500 people said that they have been diagnosed with diabetes. Recent statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show that Hispanic people develop diabetes at twice the rate of the general population.
