Higher than normal flu season

A significantly more severe flu season is striking Yuma harder and earlier than recent years, prompting our hospital to take steps to further protect the health of our patients and community.

  • YRMC asks that residents experiencing cold and flu symptoms please avoid using the Emergency Department, which is exceptionally busy this time of year. If treatment is necessary for cold or flu symptoms, visit your primary care provider or an urgent care clinic. 
  • The hospital recently enacted Visitor Restrictions for the flu season. Children 15 years and younger are not allowed to visit the hospital. Also, adults experiencing cold or flu symptoms are asked to refrain from visiting the hospital during the flu season. Note: Visitor Restrictions only involve visitors, not people of any age needing medical treatment. 
When to seek medical care:
  • The flu and common cold have similar symptoms of nasal congestion, sore throat, sneezing, fever, body aches and tiredness.  Influenza can result in a higher temperature and may last longer in some cases.  People over the age of 50, pregnant women, children under 2, those with weakened immune systems due to chronic conditions, medication, or chemotherapy should see their physician.  Anyone with dehydration, worsening cough, difficulty breathing, or high fever should seek medical care.  If you are concerned, seek medical care with your primary care physician, at a clinic or urgent care facility as soon as possible.  The Emergency Department at the hospital is not a good place to be during flu season.  The wait may be long and it is the perfect environment to spread upper respiratory infections. 
  • If you have flu-like symptoms and must leave your house, wear a mask and wash your hands before touching common items. 
Here are some tips for staying healthy during this flu season:
  • It is not too late to get a flu shot.  You cannot get the flu by receiving the flu shot because it is not a live virus.  The shot takes about two weeks to build immunity, but may have benefits much sooner.
  • Reduce exposure to sick people in crowded environments, especially if your immune system is compromised.  
  • Get plenty of sleep and stay healthy.  
  • Practice good hand hygiene; either wash well with soap and water or use the alcohol-based hand sanitizer. 
  • Cover your cough by coughing into your sleeve or a tissue. Throw the tissue away immediately and get a fresh one. 
  • If you are sick, stay home.
