Yuma Regional Medical Center (YRMC) President and CEO, Dr. Robert Trenschel, earns national honor from the prestigious leadership organization, the Baldrige Foundation.
The foundation’s multiple honors recognize U.S. organizations and leaders in business, healthcare, education and nonprofit sectors for performance excellence
Dr. Trenschel received one of 11 Leadership Excellence Awards from the Baldrige Foundation. In addition to leaders from top healthcare organizations around the nation, other recipients included a U.S. Senator and leaders representing industries ranging from higher education to a major cybersecurity firm.
The Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, the foundation’s top honor, holds the distinction of being the only formal recognition of the performance excellence of both public and private U.S. organizations given by the President of the United States. The Baldrige Performance Excellence Program is managed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce.
Dr. Trenschel’s award is especially meaningful for YRMC, which uses the Baldrige Framework for Excellence as the foundation for the medical center’s approach to continuous performance improvement. Key elements of that performance system include a strategic planning process, action planning, employee and medical staff training, and the performance measurement process through use of an organizational Balanced Scorecard.
“Each year we accept the nominations of many individuals working tirelessly to promote the Baldrige Framework and further the mission of the Foundation,” said Al Faber, President and CEO of the Foundation for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. “Through their efforts to grow the Baldrige community, they help thousands of organizations across the country to improve their performance.”
Dr. Trenschel will receive his honor during the Annual Baldrige Foundation Awards Ceremony, held as part of the 32st annual Quest for Excellence conference in March at the Gaylord National Harbor in Maryland.
“I’m humbled and honored to receive this prestigious national award. I accept this on behalf of all of our staff, as we are on this incredible journey together,” Dr. Trenschel said. “I thank our staff, leadership, and Board of Directors profusely for our incredible accomplishments to date and the wonderful future we have ahead of us.”
During his tenure at YRMC, the organization and its employees have earned numerous awards and honors for quality care, including:
- YRMC has been accredited through DNV-GL – Healthcare, demonstrating that the medical center meets or exceeds patient safety standards set forth by the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. DNV-GL, a global quality assurance organization, partners with hospitals for safer healthcare by providing quality-driven accreditation.
- YRMC earned the Level 3 Achievement Award by the Southwest Alliance for Excellence. YRMC was one of only three recipients in the Southwest recognized through the 2017 Performance Excellence Program. YRMC has also received the Level 2 Commitment Award and the Showcase in Excellence Award from SWAE.
- YRMC Cancer Center has been accredited by the American College of Surgeons' (ACoS) Commission on Cancer (CoC). The Cancer Center has also been recognized by the American Society of Clinical Oncology's Quality Oncology Practice Initiative and the American College of Radiology.
- YRMC was one of the first hospitals in the nation to be recognized by Blue Cross Blue Shield as a Blue Distinction Center for Maternity Care.
Dr. Trenschel came to YRMC in 2015, bringing with him nearly 20 years of healthcare and medical management experience. Dr. Trenschel’s leadership marks the first time a physician has served YRMC as its President and CEO.
Prior to coming to Yuma, he held various healthcare leadership roles at several highly regarded regional health systems, including executive vice president of the Harris Health System, senior vice president of medical group operations at Aurora Health Care, and chief medical officer and vice president of clinical operations at Florida Community Health Centers. Prior to his roles as a healthcare industry executive, Dr. Trenschel served as a private practice physician from 1990 to 2000.
