Your Weight Loss Journey

Like any successful journey, your weight loss journey will begin with a single step. In this case, that first step will be to attend one of our free Weight Loss Surgery Seminars. Once you’ve attended a seminar, we encourage you to attend one of our Patient Support Group meetings where you can meet patients who have already undergone the procedure you’re considering.

Preparation for Weight Loss Surgery

If you decide to move forward on the path to weight loss surgery, your bariatric team at Yuma Regional Medical Center will be with you every step of the way. To help our team gain a better understanding of your medical needs, you will be asked to complete a Bariatric Surgery Patient History Questionnaire if you haven’t already completed one for the seminar. You will then enter a preparation phase which will last approximately three to six months. During this time, you will meet with your primary physician and other medical specialists who will carefully evaluate your overall health and your need for bariatric surgery. They will discuss the procedure that is right for you, any risks associated it, the potential results and the commitment that will be required on your part to help ensure that the outcome is as successful as it can be. That commitment will include adopting a healthy diet and getting regular exercise. Your bariatric team will also recommend that you continue these healthy lifestyle practices after your weight loss surgery.

Once you are ready for surgery, you will meet with our board certified surgeon, who will consult with you, answer any questions you have and schedule your surgery. You will be advised on any steps you must take to prepare for surgery, such as dietary changes and lab work. You will meet with your surgeon again one to two weeks prior to surgery to go over any last-minute concerns.

The Day of Your Surgery

On the day of your surgery, we recommend that you bring along a family member or friend to provide additional support. You will receive general anesthesia so you will be asleep for the procedure, which will usually be performed using a laparoscopic (minimally invasive) technique. Hospital stays are typically only two days, but your physician will determine what’s right for you.

Your Recovery

When you are ready to be discharged from the hospital, you will be given specific instructions to follow. For example, you will begin with a liquid diet before you gradually transition to solid foods. Most patients are able to resume normal activities within one week. You will also have several follow-up appointments with your weight loss team. We encourage you to attend our Patient Support Group meetings where you can exchange ideas and information with other patients who have had weight loss surgery.

You’ll also have an opportunity to join a private Facebook group that is managed by the bariatric team. Participation is limited exclusively to patients who have begun their weight loss journey or have already had weight loss surgery. The Facebook group serves as a private forum where patients can ask questions, offer support and encouragement to each other and receive updates about the bariatric program.

You will likely have many questions after your surgery, and our bariatric team will be glad to answer them and support you through every step of your recovery and beyond. It is our goal to help you reach your weight loss goals so you can live the active, healthy lifestyle you’ve always wanted.

If you have any questions about the weight loss surgery program at Yuma Regional Medical Center, please call us as 928-336-5483 (LITE) or email us at yumalite@yumaregional.org and a member of our team will be glad to assist you.
