Minimally Invasive Surgery Techniques

Many of the procedures performed in Women’s Surgical Services, such as hysterectomies, fibroid removal and the treatment of endometriosis and ectopic pregnancies, can be performed using minimally invasive surgery (MIS) techniques. MIS, which includes laparoscopic and vaginal procedures, is a state-of-the-art alternative to traditional open surgery. This advanced surgical technique uses smaller incisions, so it offers patients many advantages, including less pain, less scarring, a shorter hospital stay and a faster recovery.
American Institute of Minimally Invasive Surgery
Yuma Regional Medical Center has been designated as a Center of Excellence in Women's Health by the American Institute of Minimally Invasive Surgery (AIMIS). To achieve this designation, a hospital must have an accredited AIMIS surgeon on staff and meet high standards for MIS procedures. We are honored to be the only hospital in Arizona to have achieved this designation.

All MIS procedures are performed at the Yuma Regional Medical Center Women's Surgical Services Center. The typical recovery time for a minimally invasive procedure is ten days to two weeks, as compared to traditional abdominal surgery, which usually requires six weeks of recovery time. In addition, MIS procedures typically only require an overnight hospital stay while the hospital stay for major abdominal surgery can be anywhere from five to seven days.
