This fast, painless and noninvasive exam is used to create detailed images of internal organs, bones, soft tissue and blood vessels. In addition, specialized scans shed essential light on certain conditions and diseases.
- A Cardiac CT Scan generates a calcium score and produces images of your coronary arteries to detect blockages or narrowing caused by plaque buildup – an indicator of coronary artery disease and risk for heart attack.
- A Low-Dose CT Scan of the lower chest is used as a screening test for lung cancer, emitting lower amounts of radiation than a standard chest CT scan, without the need for intravenous (IV) contrast.
- A PET/CT Scan, performed at the Yuma Regional Medical Center Southwest PET/CT Institute, is a powerful combination of two technologies that allows for earlier and more accurate detection of disease than either one alone. A PET/CT scan can show if a tumor is benign or malignant (cancerous), whether a cancer has spread and how a tumor is responding to treatment. It can also identify coronary artery disease at an early stage and assess heart health after a heart attack, as well as how a patient is responding to treatment. A PET/CT scan is also useful in diagnosing epilepsy or Parkinson’s disease, as well as evaluating potential for developing Alzheimer’s disease long before symptoms occur.
A DEXA scan is an imaging test that measures bone density. Results can provide helpful details about your risk for osteoporosis and fractures.
Among the most commonly used diagnostic tools, diagnostic X-rays use a small amount of radiation to produce images of your body’s internal structures and evaluate a wide range of illnesses and injuries. They are also used for specialized testing, such as:
- Bone Density (DEXA) Tests – A painless, non-surgical method used to measure bone density and evaluate risks for osteoporosis.
- Fluoroscopy – A diagnostic tool that uses X-rays to produce real-time video images of the part of the body being evaluated.
Minimally invasive treatments are guided by radiologic imaging – including X-rays, MRIs or other imaging technology – and performed by highly skilled, board-certified interventional radiologists. Often with less risk, pain and recovery time for patients, IR has become the primary treatment for numerous conditions.
- Angioplasty is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat an artery that has become blocked or narrowed.
- Embolization blocks the flow of blood to a tumor or uterine fibroid and thereby stops its growth.
- Radiofrequency Ablation uses high-frequency electrical currents to destroy cancer cells.
- Stenting places a small wire mesh tube into a blood vessel to help keep it open.
- Thrombolysis improves blood flow by dissolving abnormal blood clots.
This painless, noninvasive, radiation-free procedure uses a powerful magnetic field, radiofrequency waves and a computer to produce clear, detailed images of the body’s internal organs and structures. It is extremely useful in accurate diagnosis and effective treatment plan design.
MRIs are not appropriate for everyone. Be sure to notify your doctor if you are claustrophobic, pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have a pacemaker, defibrillator, aneurysm clip in your brain, a shunt with telesensor, inner ear implants (cochlear), metal fragments in one or both eyes, implanted spinal cord stimulators, metal pins or other metal implants.

- Mammography – X-rays used to detect early signs of breast cancer before patients develop symptoms.
- Contrast Enhanced Mammography – X-rays that see deeper and better than the standard mammogram by using iodinated contrast dye. This dye makes finding new blood vessels that develop when cancers grow easier.
- Ultrasound – Breast ultrasound uses sound waves to capture images of the inside of the breast showing certain breast changes, like fluid-filled cysts, that can be harder to see on mammograms.
- Breast MRI Breast MRI – Uses radio waves and strong magnets to make detailed pictures of the inside of the breast.
- Image-Guided Breast Biopsy – Safe and accurate non-surgical method to diagnose abnormal findings at breast imaging.
This imaging test uses low-dose radioactive material called radiotracers that are injected into the bloodstream, inhaled or swallowed and then detected by a gamma camera to create images of blood flow and organ function. The gamma camera is able to capture images of blood and certain tissues invisible to other radiological equipment. Very low-dose radiation is involved, does not cause harm or damage to the patient and dissipates from the body after the procedure. This technology is diagnosing cancer and other life-threatening diseases in their earliest stages, when treatment offers the most benefit. Nuclear medicine is often used to:
- Identify internal bleeding.
- Detect and measure dysfunctions in the thyroid, lymph nodes, stomach, gallbladder, intestines, kidneys and urinary tract.
- Evaluate blood flow in kidneys, lungs, brain and liver.
- Identify tumors.
- Judge the aggressiveness of tumors.
- Investigate neurological disorders and brain abnormalities.
- Evaluate bone cancers and other skeletal diseases.
Also referred to as sonography, this safe and painless exam uses high-frequency sound waves to generate images of organs, tissues, veins and arteries. Commonly used during pregnancy, ultrasound can also capture real-time images of other parts of the body including the liver, kidneys, gallbladder, musculoskeletal and other structures. An ultrasound is performed with gel on the patient’s skin and a hand-held transducer device that is moved over an area and projects sound waves to generate internal images. It does not use radiation, making it safe for everyone including expectant moms and children.
Ultrasound is a critical tool in the Emergency Department for quick diagnosis and real-time results. It is also useful in guiding delicate procedures such as spinal nerve blocks, biopsies of potential cancer growths and aspirations of joints, abscesses and cysts.
