With your decision to move forward, your Yuma Regional bariatric team will be with you every step of the way. Completion of our Bariatric Surgery Patient History Questionnaire will help us understand your medical needs. During the preparation phase that follows, lasting three to six months, your primary physician and other medical specialists will meet with you and carefully evaluate your overall health, need for bariatric surgery, and the procedure that is most appropriate for you. You will learn about any associated risks and potential results, as well as the required commitment from you prior to surgery to help ensure a successful outcome – including a healthy diet and regular exercise. We will also recommend that you continue these healthy lifestyle practices after surgery.
Once you are ready for surgery, our board-certified surgeon will consult with you, answer your questions and schedule your surgery. You will review preparation steps for surgery, including dietary changes and required lab work. One to two weeks before surgery, you will meet with the surgeon again to discuss any last minute concerns.
We recommend that you bring along a family member or friend to provide additional support. With general anesthesia, you will be asleep for the procedure. Hospital stays are typically about two days, but your physician will determine what is best for you.
When you are ready for discharge from the hospital, you will receive specific instructions about diet, activity level and follow-up care. You will begin with a liquid diet and gradually transition to solid foods. Most people are able to resume normal activities within one week. Several follow-up appointments with the bariatric care team are planned as well. We encourage you to attend our Patient Support Group meetings where you can exchange ideas and information with other patients who have had weight-loss surgery.
The decision to have weight-loss surgery is monumental and life-changing. To help you learn as much as possible, we invite you to attend a support group meeting for powerful inspiration from people who have taken steps to overcome their own weight management challenges, including people who have had weight-loss surgery.
You will also have the opportunity to join a private Facebook group that is managed by our bariatric team and reserved for those who have begun a weight-loss journey with us or have already had surgery. Participants can ask questions, offer support and encourage others, as well as find updates about the bariatric program.
