When the small bones of the spine (vertebrae) become fractured or cause pain for another reason such as a deformity, a spine and back care specialist at Yuma Regional Medical Center may recommend a procedure called a spinal fusion. If you require this procedure, your surgeon will fuse some of the bones in your spine together to limit the movement of these bones and help relieve your pain. Even though some of your bones may be fused together after your spinal fusion procedure, you may actually feel more flexible because you can move with less pain.
At Yuma Regional Medical Center, we perform two types of spinal fusion surgery:
Spinal fusion surgery is performed under general anesthesia and can be done from the front (anterior side) of the body or from the back (posterior side) of the body. Your surgeon will determine which procedure is best for you.
