Inspiring the next generation of healthcare professionals, the Yuma Regional Medical Center (YRMC) Volunteer Services Department hosted the annual YRMC Healthcare Career Camp this week, welcoming local students eager to fuel their ambitions to choose a career in healthcare.

More than 25 local high school and college students participated in educational sessions and hands-on activities where they shadowed healthcare professionals from various departments across YRMC.

“Many of our Healthcare Career Camp participants aspire to enter the healthcare industry one day and are eager to learn, so providing them with exposure to many different aspects of healthcare is an incredibly valuable experience for them,” said Elizabeth Hammonds, Director of Volunteer Services. “For our team of experts, this is a fulfilling experience. They take great pride in sharing their talents and inspiring our next generation of healthcare professionals, making this such an enriching and fun week for everyone involved.”

During the weeklong camp, students participated in hospital tours, classroom lectures, interactive activities, question-and-answer sessions, and shadowing. They explored careers in emergency medicine, cardiology and respiratory therapy, and learned about stress management, lab services and wound care. Students also participated in simulations where they learned about childbirth, performed mock surgical procedures, and took part in medical emergency scenarios.

Throughout the week, students also learned about ways in which they can continue their exploration of healthcare careers with educational sessions on YRMC programs like Mentor Me M.D., surgical tech internships and allied health programs through YRMC’s partnership with Arizona Western College. The week’s activities were capped off by a group of 10 new medical residents sharing their journey through medical school and family medicine residency to give attendees an in-depth look at what it takes to be a medical doctor.
